Deprecated Payment Methods (2025)

On April 15 2025 (extended from January 15, 2025, in Event Espresso version 5.0.32.p), we will deprecate (sunsetting/discontinuing/removing/etc.) several outdated or obsolete payment integrations in Event Espresso 5. We encourage you to migrate to a new payment integration by that date. Failure to choose a new payment gateway integration after that date may result in failed payments. Our updated payment integrations offer enhanced features and improved security.

Authorize.net support informed one user over the phone that several updates in early February likely corrupted API keys for some users. They suggested that clients regenerate the key if they encounter validation issues. This can be investigated further by viewing any E00007 errors while attempting to make a payment or visiting the Event Espresso payment logs in: Event Espresso > Payment Methods > Logs (tab).

Please note that these changes were not made by choice but are necessary due to the Authorize.net deprecating older APIs. We are simply adhering to the guidelines by implementing the latest version of the API.

Deprecated Payment Methods:

The following payment integrations will be removed:

  • PayPal Standard
  • PayPal Express
  • PayPal Smart Buttons
  • PayPal Pro
  • Braintree
  • Payflow Pro
  • Authorize.net SIM
  • Authorize.net AIM.

Transition:

Please begin transitioning to one of our supported payment methods, including:

To migrate to PayPal Commerce (included in Event Espresso core), go to Event Espresso > Payment Methods > click the PayPal Commerce tab > activate PayPal Commerce, and then click the blue "Connect with PayPal" button to follow the prompts. See the PayPal Commerce integration documentation for more information.

Customers with an Everything License can download the Stripe, Square, or Authorize.net Accept add-ons for free from their account page. Customers with a Personal License can purchase these add-ons individually after logging in to their account. Please note that an active support license is required to purchase add-ons to ensure compatibility between the core Event Espresso code and the add-on code.

Does this apply to Event Espresso 3?

This is applicable for Event Espresso versions 4/5 and  NOT EE3. The system we use to send out notices is the same system used for plugin updates, so it just sends the notice to any plugin that checks for updates with our server. On EE3, the payment methods will continue to work as they do now (you can safely ignore the notice)

EE3 is considered our legacy product and no longer receives updates other than security-related bugs. If any of those payment methods suddenly stop working, the official answer from Event Espresso would be that it is time to move to EE5 (the EE3 codebase is showing its age now; that’s one of the reasons we originally moved to EE4 and redesigned the database schema when doing so).

What Payment Method are You Using?

How to determine which payment method of Event Espresso you are using:

  1. Log into the WordPress Admin Panel

Navigate to your website's WordPress dashboard by logging in with your administrator credentials.

  2. Access the Event Espresso Settings

In the left-hand menu, look for “Event Espresso” and click it. From the submenu, select “Payment Methods”.

  3. View Active Payment Methods

In the Payment Methods section, you’ll see a list of available payment gateways such as:

    • PayPal (Express, Smart Buttons, Braintree, Standard, Commerce, etc.)
    • Stripe
    • Authorize.net (AIM, SIM, Accept or eCheck)
    • Square
    • Offline payment methods (Check, Invoice, etc.)

Active payment methods will typically have a green active status showing they are enabled.

  4. Check the Active Payment Gateway Configuration

Click on the gear/settings icon next to an active payment method to review its configuration. Review the settings to confirm which gateway is currently being used (e.g., PayPal email address, Authorize.net API keys, etc.).

  5. Review on the Checkout Page (optional)

If you’re unsure after checking the admin panel, you can simulate a test registration for an event on your site. Proceed to the checkout page to view the payment options available to your users.

  6. Confirm via Event Espresso Logs (Optional)

Go to Event Espresso → Transactions. Review the list of transactions and check which payment method was used for recent payments.
